Western Kentucky’s women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Ohio on Thursday night at the WKU Soccer Complex on Senior Night.

After falling behind early, WKU (2-5-0) tied the score in the first half but an Ohio (4-1-1) goal just a few minutes later proved to be the game-winner.

“We just need to stay the course now,” WKU coach Jason Neidell said in a news release. “I know our results haven’t been what we’ve wanted them to be, but a new year starts next week. We’ve been practicing really hard. Our practices have been great. I think it showed in tonight’s game. We just need to stay the course and keep getting after it in practice. Just keep getting better every day.”

The Bobcats scored early, netting a goal in the ninth minute. WKU was able to tie up the score in the 20th minute on a goal from Kayla Meyer. Anna Isger found Meyer streaking towards the goal just outside of the box. Meyer took an initial touch and then launched a shot that the keeper was able to get a hand on but couldn’t stop.

It was Meyer’s fifth goal of the season and the 12th of her career.

Ohio took the lead again in the 29th minute and that score held for the rest of the game.

The Hilltoppers’ Emma Tompkins got her first start of the season in goal and made five saves in the match.

WKU was outshot 16-7 in the game.

The Tops will go on a three-game road swing to begin Conference USA play. The Hilltoppers kick off league play at Louisiana Tech on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
