Arame Niang has announced her intent to transfer from the Western Kentucky women’s basketball program.
The redshirt sophomore shared via Twitter on Friday, “I’ve been blessed to live in Bowling Green and have an opportunity to play ball at WKU but it’s time for me to start a new journey and I’m beyond excited Thanks to everyone who supported me the past few years.”
The Daily News learned before Niang’s announcement that the Rufisque, Senegal, native was not expected to return to the program this offseason.
Niang came off the bench last season for the Lady Toppers and averaged 5.7 points and 3.6 rebounds in 15.3 minutes per game. A nagging knee injury most of the season limited her development and adjustment to American-style basketball. Niang sat out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA transfer requirements after playing one year at Kansai Gaidai University in Japan.
At 6-foot-3, Niang brought needed assistance in the post with 6-4 forward Raneem Elgedawy, but also showed flashes of ability from behind the 3-point line. She was 16-of-55 from long range and had a memorable stretch of three straight 3s in the Conference USA Tournament against eventual league champion, Rice.
Niang missed just two games last season for WKU, which finished 20-15 and reached the third round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
Along with Niang, WKU next year will be without graduating seniors Sidnee Bopp, Jae’Lisa Allen and Kayla Smith.
The program earlier this week announced the signing of junior college point guard Jo’Nah Johnson from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
