Lady Tops pick up commitment from UTEP transfer

The Western Kentucky women’s basketball team has added some size to next season’s roster with UTEP transfer Mariama Sow announcing her decision to transfer to WKU.

“Thrilled to announce my next adventure with Western Kentucky University!” Sow said in a social media post. “Massive shoutout to everyone who’s been part of my journey so far. Can’t wait to see what’s next! Let’s do this!”

The 6-foot-3 forward spent one season at UTEP averaging 3.3 points and 2.3 rebounds. She saw limited action in UTEP’s two meetings against WKU last season.

She previously played at New Mexico Junior College where she appeared in 32 games, scoring in double figures 11 times and averaged 5.8 points and 5.8 rebounds in 2022-23.

Sow is added to a roster that has already lost freshman guard Nevaeh Foster in the transfer portal to IUPUI. WKU has also confirmed that sophomore guard Karris Allen and senior guard Aaliyah Pitts are also in the portal.

Foster signed with IUPUI earlier this week, announcing her decision on social media after entering the portal on March 18. She appeared in 14 games last season, scoring a career-high 14 points against West Virginia State on Dec. 29. She saw limited action in conference play, appearing in four conference games totaling 20 minutes of action.

Allen entered the portal last week after playing the last two seasons at WKU. She appeared in 24 games her freshman season, averaging 4.4 points and 2.9 rebounds. Last season Allen appeared in 31 games, making 12 starts. She averaged 5.4 points and four rebounds, scoring a season-high 15 points against Vermont on Nov. 25.

Pitts also played the last two seasons for WKU after transferring from Virginia.

She started all 33 games in 2022-23, averaging 5.3 points and 2.8 rebounds. Last season she appeared in 32 games with 10 starts, including a season-high 12 points against Middle Tennessee on Feb. 24.
