Lady Toppers drop 4-2 road decision to UAB

- Western Kentucky junior Sofia Blanco won her singles match to improve to 14-1 this season in the Lady Toppers’ 4-2 loss to UAB on Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama.
Western Kentucky’s women’s tennis team fell 4-2 against UAB on Saturday at the Hoover Met Tennis Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
“I would say this was our best doubles of the year,” WKU coach Greg Davis said in a news release. “This weekend was great preparation for the future schedule and the type of teams ahead. Great performance out of Sofia. Her consistency has been a major positive for the team.”
The Lady Toppers (9-7) opened the match by claiming the doubles points with victories from the pairs of Samantha Martinez/Mariana Zegada and Paola Cortez/Anna-Marie Kopecka. Martinez and Zegada defeated Enya Ratkic and Maggie White 6-1 in No. 3 doubles, and Cortez and Kopecka defeated Vanessa Mellynchuk and Mackenzie White 6-3 in No. 1 doubles.
Sofia Blanco highlighted singles play for WKU by defeating Klara Kajabova 6-4, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. It was the eighth straight win for Blanco, who improved to 14-1 this season. Blanco’s 14 singles wins are tied for seventh-most in a single season in program history, and she is now tied for third in program history in career singles wins.
WKU will return to Alabama for its next match. The Lady Toppers are scheduled to face Alabama A&M in Huntsville on Wednesday. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT.
