South Warren’s Jackie Van Meter was pleased, but not satisfied.

The junior shot a 4-over-par 76 Friday in the first round of the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA Girls’ State Golf Championship, leaving herself tied for fourth individually entering today’s final round at Bowling Green Country Club.

Van Meter was happy with her standing, she said, but disappointed that her putter let her down at times.

“The greens were firm, and they weren’t rolling as fast as I thought,” Van Meter said. “I played well and hit drives well. I was hitting the ball well, but the putting – I couldn’t get anything to drop.”

Van Meter is seven shots behind individual leader Emma Talley, the reigning champion from Caldwell County. Talley leads North Hardin’s Lydia Gumm by four strokes.

Van Meter starts her final round at 8:54 a.m. today.

“I think I have to do the same thing I did today, which is hope putts drop,” she said. “I know these girls behind us are doing great, and I think I’m up there, but I’m just going to work hard again.”

Franklin-Simpson eighth-grader Mary Joiner also worked her way up the leaderboard, tying for 12th with a 79. She’ll tee off today at 9:03 a.m.

“If I would’ve hit more greens and not three-putted, it would have been better,” Joiner said. “I don’t like these greens at all. They were really fast.

“Last year was my first year here, and I didn’t play well. Being here this year is better because I knew what to expect.”

South Warren junior Mallory Vaughn got off to a strong start – moving to 2 over through five holes – but missed the cut with an 89.

After completing hole No. 5, Vaughn was struck in the forearm by a ball on the fly from the group 200 yards behind her.

The ball left a welt three times the size of a golf ball on her arm, and the junior had to ice it for the rest of the round, she said.

Vaughn went 14 over par over her next 10 holes before rallying to finish 1 over in her last three.

“She hit me, and it took a few holes to get it back after that,” Vaughn said. “It’s a tough course, but I enjoyed every second of it. I’m looking forward to coming back next year.”

On the team side, Glasgow sits in seventh place with a total of 350. The top 11 teams from Friday advanced.

“The course played really tough, and that was very evident by the scores,” Glasgow coach Jonathan Belcher said. “Our scores showed that too. Obviously, we didn’t play as well as we wanted to, but tomorrow’s a new day.”

Glasgow was led by senior Blair Dennison, who shot an 11-over-par 83. She was followed by Emily Alexander’s 84, Ashton Foushee’s 89 and Taylor Phelps’ 94.

Sacred Heart leads the team standings with a 322 total and is followed by Region 4 champion Green County and Notre Dame Academy.

Glasgow has four players who have been to the state tournament before, and the gap between second and seventh place is 12 strokes.

With that in mind, the Lady Scotties won’t be panicking, Belcher said. Glasgow starts its second day at 9:12 a.m., when senior Courtney Swindle hits the links.
