Greenwood senior Amelia Matzke is still in the early stages of her swim career, having started swimming competitively five years ago.

Now Matzke will continue her swimming career at the next level, signing to swim at Youngstown State on Tuesday during a ceremony at Indian Hills Country Club.

“It’s exciting,” Matzke said. “Five years ago when I started swimming I would have never thought swimming collegiately would have been in my future, especially at the D1 level. I really surprised myself the last few years, so to see this day actually come is an exciting day for me.”

Matzke has made a splash in her brief career, becoming one of the top sprinters in the area. She claimed the region title in the 50-yard freestyle and earned a second place region finish in the 100-yard butterfly last season. At the state meet, Matzke finished 11th in the freestyle, while also racing in the fly as well as the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays.

She said Youngstown State has indicated they will experiment with her when she arrives next year, trying her in longer distance races to see what she can do.

Matzke said she is looking forward to that challenge.

“I feel like since I started swimming late I am learning later, a lot of things that most people probably learn earlier in their life and their swimming career,” Matzke said. “It’s very fun for me.”

She also added she is excited to have her college decision behind her.

“It’s a huge relief knowing I have my school picked,” Matzke said. “I know it is official. I know I am signed, so I know everything is in stone for the next year. Now I can sit back and relax for the rest of my senior year knowing that it’s already done.”
