Greenwood girls complete team sweep

With the pressure seemingly on, Greenwood’s Baylee Kilgore and McLain Bender performed at their best.
The No. 3 seed girls’ doubles team won 6-2, 6-0 over No. 4 Krislyn Hudson and Emily Tyler of South Warren in Tuesday’s Region 4 Tennis Tournament finals at Kereiakes Park. Not only did Kilgore and Bender earn their first region titles, but they also clinched the girls’ team championship for Greenwood.
Had Kilgore and Bender lost in the final of four matches to wrap up Tuesday, Greenwood and Bowling Green would’ve finished tied at 12 points apiece, and a tiebreaker match would’ve been played. Instead, Greenwood swept the team titles as the boys captured their second straight title before Monday’s quarterfinal and semifinal rounds were complete.
“I think we played the best we played all year in this match,” Bender said. “I think the pressure actually helped, with all the people watching. There was a lot of determination – and deep breathing.”
Deep breathing turned into breathing easy pretty quickly. Kilgore and Bender won the final five points in the opening set, before their 6-0 second set. It was an impressive showing for two players who hadn’t participated in a region semifinal before Monday, much less a region final.
“It took a lot to stay calm, but I think we did,” Kilgore said. “We focused on our own match. We knew about the team standings, but we wanted to focus on our match.”
Hudson and Tyler already made South Warren history by being the school’s first representatives, singles or doubles, in a regional final and were seeking the school’s first region title.
But they’ll still be in the state tournament as finalists, along with Monday’s semifinalists, advance to the state tourney next week in Lexington.
Both Greenwood teams will host sectional play Saturday.
With the exception of the girls’ team title in doubt, Tuesday’s championships were void of drama. Top-seeded Billy Adams and Blake Nelson of Greenwood won their second boys’ doubles title in three years by beating No. 2 Timothy Goodwin and Taylor Collins of Warren East 6-1, 6-1.
The two played as individuals in last year’s region tournament, but Greenwood coach Tim Dethridge suggested they play as a team again.
The suggestion worked.
“They agreed and were all for it,” Dethridge said. “It’s actually turned out for the better of the program.”
Defending individual champions Will True of Bowling Green and Cassie Pennington of Greenwood capped their region dominance in their senior campaigns.
Top-seeded True won his second straight title by beating No. 2 Armit Avula of Greenwood 6-1, 6-0. True wasn’t overwhelmed with emotion of winning another region title.
“It was just another tournament for me,” True said. “But I’m still pleased with my result.”
Pennington won her fifth straight crown with a 6-1, 6-0 win over No. 2 Lauren Wiseman of Bowling Green, and the victory was bittersweet.
“It’s actually kind of sad,” Pennington said. “I feel like I’ve been out her forever, and it’s kind of weird for it to be ending.”
