- Bowling Green senior Lucy Lowe ties on her cap during the Region 2 Championship for swimming and diving at Bowling Green High School on Saturday, Feb. 3.
The Bowling Green swimming and diving team didn’t have to wait past Saturday to celebrate another region title.
Hosting the tournament for the first time in the school’s new indoor facility, Bowling Green clinched the region crown during Saturday’s swim portion of the Region 2 Tournament. It was the 19th straight region title for Bowling Green.
Bowling Green finished the day with 819.5 combined points, with South Warren (669 points) second and Greenwood (409.5 points) third.
BG clinched the boys’ crown in the final relay, edging South Warren 397-385. On the girls’ side, Bowling Green won with 422.5 points. South Warren was second with 284 points, edging Greenwood by one point.
The diving portion of the region meet will take place on Tuesday in Louisville.
“It was a battle all day,” BG coach Dee Wilkins said. “South Warren swam really well. We didn’t have some of our better swims today, but we were able to hang on. We had a good back half of the meet, won a couple of relays to get it done.”
Bowling Green senior Cooper Neal said it was big to continue the streak.
“Obviously the pressure is there when you have a long streak,” Neal said. “Nobody wants to lose it, especially when it’s your time to be the oldest person on the team and the captain. The pressure really sets in. It just feels great to keep the streak alive.”
Neal earned an individual win in the 100-yard breaststroke and joined Hamilton Gover, Matias Verduzco and Tristan Griffin to win the 200 freestyle relay.
Alfonso Verduzco earned the win in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle for Bowling Green. Warren Woodall picked up the win in the 100 fly, while Griffin finished first in the 100 freestyle.
Woodall, Griffin, Matias Verduzco and Alfonso Verduzco won the 400 freestyle relay, the final race of the day, to clinch the region title for the boys’ team.
On the girls’ side, senior Carlie Bowen said it felt good to compete in the home pool.
“Being able to swim my last region in this pool is amazing,” Bowen said. “All of us worked so hard to get here. It’s just a team effort. I wouldn’t be able to do this without all my teammates.”
Bowen earned the win in the 100 freestyle and joined Riley Crowe, Cary Bowen and Lucy Lowe to win the 400 freestyle relay.
Riley Crowe picked up the win in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle for Bowling Green.
Greenwood’s Amelia Matzke was named the female swimmer of the meet after two individual wins and two relay wins.
Matzke won the 50 freestyle and 100 fly. She joined Mia Usinger, Brianne Flikkema and Leela Kaul to win the 200 medley relay and joined Flikkema, Usinger and Maddie Boyer to win the 200 freestyle relay.
“It means a lot,” Matzke said. “I did pretty good for my senior season. I did what I needed to do to go to semi-state. I’m prepared for next week and the week after that too.”
South Warren’s Sarah McGuinness earned a win in the 100 backstroke.
On the boys’ side, South Warren’s Brian Bosse was named the male swimmer of the meet.
He joined Eli Jones, Lari Skeric and Kenan Aganovic to win the 200 medley relay. Bosse earned individual wins in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke – edging Woodall by 0.02 seconds.
“It was super close,” Bosse said. “I love racing with Warren Woodall. He’s an amazing swimmer. We love competing against each other, but this is just how it turned out for us today. It feels great. It really does feel amazing.”
South Warren’s Skeric won the 50 freestyle.
This year is the first year of the new format for state meets, with the nine regions divided into three semi-state sections to determine the field for the state tournament.
The top two competitors in each event and the next 10 best times in Region 1, 2 and 3 advance to the semi-state round which will take place at Russell County on Feb. 17.
The top three at each semi-state and the next best 15 times statewide advance to the state finals which begins Feb. 22 at the Lancaster Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
“It’s going to be a lot different from past seasons going straight to state,” Wilkins said. “Now we have a one day timed final in Russell Springs. It’s going to be something new. I don’t think it is very popular with many of the coaches doing this, but it is exciting.”
