Moral victory

Sometimes the final score isn’t the most significant thing in prep sports.

The Bowling Green girls’ soccer team won 6-1 Tuesday at Warren Central and improved to 9-1-1 on the season. But the more important score was at halftime when the game was tied 1-1.

“We played a tremendous first half – that was probably the best half we have played since I’ve been here,” Warren Central coach Sam Flener said. “In the second half, we just got tired. We’re just short on players.”

When the two teams met last season, Bowling Green had a big lead in a driving rainstorm when Warren Central asked to end the game early.

“Last year, it was 9-0 with 25 minutes to go and we left and went home,” Flener said. “This is a huge moral victory to have even played with them. (We have) no seniors and no experienced subs.

“I’m not much for moral victories, but that’s what it is. Last year, the girls left crying, thinking they can’t compete. Now they know they can play with one of the top teams in Kentucky.”

Bowling Green was coming off a grueling stretch. The Lady Purples played four games in three days over the weekend in the Purples Classic.

“We came out a little flat – you could tell that,” BGHS coach Lisa Correa said. “We were not stringing passes together like we saw this past weekend.”

The Lady Dragons didn’t just play with Bowling Green. For most of the first half, they led the Lady Purples.

In the fifth minute, junior Becca Rhoades took a pass from Nicole Aviles and got behind the BGHS defense to score on a breakaway goal.

“Becca is just fast,” Flener said. “She’s very skilled, but she’s had a hard time finishing. That was a beautiful goal, though.”

The 1-0 lead held up for 33 minutes as the Central defense turned away several scoring opportunities.

“I don’t know if that has ever happened – this team may not have ever led Bowling Green,” Flener said. “Even with the lead, we didn’t get sloppy, thinking we had the game won. These girls understood that they were playing a great team.”
