- Former Major League Baseball umpire Dan Morrison, a Glasgow native who grew up in Bowling Green, died on Monday at age 75.
Glasgow native and former Major League Baseball umpire Dan Morrison died on Monday at age 75.
Morrison, of Seminole, Fla., was born in Glasgow and grew up in Bowling Green, where he graduated from College High and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Western Kentucky University. After college graduation, he attended umpire school and he later served as an instructor. This led to his 25-year career as a Major League Baseball umpire, serving as an American League umpire from 1979-99, then continuing on for two more seasons when the the AL and NL umpires merged in 2000.
Morrison worked as an umpire in the 1992 World Series, the 1988 MLB All-Star Game, plus three American League Championship Series and three AL Division Series during his career.
In the off-seasons, he also worked at the former Allen’s Sports Center and as a referee for high school basketball in Pinellas County, Fla.
Morrison was also a rules official for the United States Golf Association and the Florida State Golf Association for the past 15 years, helping administer numerous golf tournaments for both amateur and professional events.
Morrison is survived by his wife Gayle (Fortson) Morrison, daughter Danielle (Morrison) Webber (William Webber, Jr.) and grandchildren Lila and Otis Webber.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. ET on Monday at Serenity Funeral Home in Largo, Fla. A visitation for family and friends will occur on Sunday from 3-5 p.m. ET.
