Bernard Carroll Shelton left this world to eternal life and to be with his Lord and Savior on Oct. 3, 2015, while surrounded by his family.

He was born June 23, 1932, in Harlan to the late Matt and Virginia Vowell Shelton. He was united in marriage to the late Patricia Mace Shelton. From this union came three children, the late Lillian “Libby” Shelton of Somerset, William “Bill” Shelton of Somerset and Clay Shelton (Amy) of Bowling Green; five blessed grandchildren, the late Kyle Shelton, Nick Shelton, Nathan Shelton, Noah Shelton and Natalie Shelton of Bowling Green; and three great-grandchildren, Evan, Macey and Kelly Shelton. He leaves behind a very special friend, Retta Tomlison.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Somerset, where he loved to worship God and serve the community. He started the Community Wide Dinners on Christmas and Easter in order to give everyone a chance to share a meal with others as many people were shut-in or alone on these special Christian holidays. He was one of the original board members of God’s Food Pantry and was instrumental since the very beginning in 1978 in keeping it funded and its shelves stocked with food in order to provide for those who, for whatever reason, could not afford to provide for themselves or their families.

He was preceded in death by four siblings, Charlotte Crawford, Kenneth, Joyce and Marilyn Shelton. He is survived by seven siblings, Jack Shelton (Sue) of Nancy, Janice Lovins of Indiana, Phyllis Presley (Kenneth) of Somerset, Pat Meece (Kermit) of Lexington, Henrietta Bascom (Don) of Alabama, Marcia Perkins (Luther) and John Shelton of Somerset; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration honoring Bernard will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Somerset, with Bro. Steve Spitzer officiating.

Interment will follow at Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

Visitation for Bernard Shelton begins at 4 p.m. for family and continues from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday for the public, is from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Southern Oaks Funeral Home and begins at 9 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Somerset.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made as donations to God’s Food Pantry.
