- Hundreds of bikers and motorcycles fill the parking lot in April 2019 during the annual Great Teddy Bear Run at the Warren County Justice Center.
The Toys for Tots Motorcycle Run on Saturday will give participants a chance to help children in need while taking part in a 100-mile journey.
The event will begin at Doug’s Motor City with registration at 9 a.m. and kickstands up at 11 a.m.
The cost to enter is $20 per bike or a new unopened toy.
Janel Doyle, Toys for Tots Southern Kentucky coordinator, said the run, which is in its 10th year, is one of the organization’s biggest fundraisers.
“It’s a collaboration of a lot of motorcycle enthusiasts and enthusiasts of other vehicles, like Jeep clubs,” she said. “It’s a day to raise monetary donations and toys for kids at Christmastime, and the money always stays in Warren County.”
She said the ride usually takes a couple of hours with a pitstop midway.
Before the ride begins, Doyle said that Douglas Doscher, the owner of Doug’s Motor City, will offer breakfast specials to the participants.
T-shirts may also be purchased for $20, while supplies last.
Doyle said she is hoping for nice weather and a good turnout for this year’s run.
“Last year, it rained, so we didn’t do well,” she said. “The weather can make or break us. Last year, the weather killed us.”
Since many people are starting to get into the fall spirit and are even beginning to think about Christmas, Doyle said this is the perfect time of year for the fundraiser.
“We are already starting to get our North Pole set up,” she said. “It will be ready in October, and then we will turn our phone on and begin taking requests from families on Nov. 14.”
Request calls will be accepted through Dec. 14 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday at (270) 562-0518.
Doyle said the next big Toys for Tots fundraiser will be the Hand it to a Hero event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 25 at Walmart on Campbell Lane.
“All law enforcement, fire departments and the Marine Corps will be out there and people can hand their donations over to a hero,” she said. “This will be the last of our fundraising events for the year, because then we start working in the North Pole getting toys ready for the kids.”
She said that this year, the organization will also receive in-kind gifts from the Toys for Tots Foundation that will be donated to a couple of eastern Kentucky counties still struggling after the July floods.
