City police investigating a burglary at an auto parts store early Monday found a suspect attempting to hide among the store shelves.

According to the Bowling Green Police Department, officers responded to a burglary alarm at O’Reilly Auto Parts, 2178 Russellville Road, where they met with an employee who reported that the store’s deposit safe was damaged.

As police checked a shelving area near the bathroom, an officer witnessed a man, later identified as Robert Coffey, duck into a crevice in order to avoid detection, according to a BGPD report.

Coffey, who was wearing a pair of gloves, was ordered out of the shelves and detained.

Coffey, 29, of Bowling Green told police he used a screwdriver at a side entrance to gain entry into the store and hid on the top of a shelving rack in the back of the store after the alarm sounded.

Once Coffey was convinced the alarm stopped, he climbed back down and attempted to force open the deposit safe and cash registers, but was unsuccessful, according to the police report.

He then climbed the same shelf after realizing an employee had entered the store to check on the alarm.

Police, with Coffey’s help, located a crowbar, circular saw and a pair of underwear inside the store, according to the report.

After police left with Coffey, the employee contacted BGPD to report that he found a black bag tucked away on one of the shelves containing a screwdriver and four pairs of mechanic’s gloves, according to the report.

Coffey was arrested on charges of third-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief and possession of burglary tools, and was placed in Warren County Regional Jail under a $10,000 cash bond.
