Orchestra Kentucky has been selected to perform at the 62nd gubernatorial inauguration for re-elected Gov. Andy Beshear and Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman.

The orchestra will perform during the Grand March, a tradition dating back to the mid-19th century, which serves as a formal presentation of the governor, lieutenant governor and other constitutional officers.

Orchestra Kentucky will perform as the officials descend from the third floor of the capitol to the first floor of the Capitol Rotunda.

Orchestra Kentucky music director Jeffrey Reed said he was notified about a week ago by Lindy Casebier, secretary of the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, that the orchestra was being considered for the honor.

The final decision was made by the governor and first lady.

“They have traditionally tried to spread the wealth, so to speak, with who they choose,” Reed said. “The last time, it was Louisville’s orchestra and Owensboro’s orchestra has also played in the past.”

Reed said this is the first time in the orchestra’s 25 years they have been chosen to play at the inauguration.

“This is very much an honor to be a part of the inauguration and we were pleased to be chosen for this opportunity,” Reed said. “Being part of the Grand March, a very elegant ceremony full of tradition, is something we are really looking forward to.”

Reed said the orchestra will also perform some pre-ceremony patriotic music and during the formal portion, some Sousa marches and music similar to what would be heard during a coronation, but American to fit the occasion.

They will also play a song chosen by the governor and first lady for their first dance, and a few other dance numbers for the guests.

All music selections are American, and Reed said there will even be music from “West Side Story.”

“It’s important to show off the works of American composers, both living and deceased, for such an important American occasion,” he said.

Reed said the orchestra will rehearse on the day of the inauguration, “which is typical for us.”

“I would like for those responsible to know how happy we are and how thankful we are for this honor,” he said. “This puts the orchestra on more of a state level and brings pride to the community, kind of like the hometown basketball team going to the state championships. It puts us on a higher plane, brings honor, pride and prestige to us and it’s important to our patrons to help us celebrate that.”

The inauguration festivities, themed “Forward Together,” will take place on Dec. 12, with the Grand March beginning at 5 p.m. in the rotunda of the state capitol in Frankfort.
