A man arrested earlier this year after traveling from Owensboro to Bowling Green for what he believed would be a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old has pleaded guilty to federal crimes.
Corey James Jarboe, 30, of Owensboro, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Bowling Green to charges of attempted online enticement of a minor and attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor.
Jarboe has been held in Warren County Regional Jail since April 18 on the charges, which stemmed from an undercover investigation in which he carried on an online correspondence with a Kentucky State Police investigator posing as a 14-year-old girl.
According to a copy of the plea agreement filed in the case, Jarboe began messaging the agent on Jan. 18, with the messages becoming sexual the following day.
At one point, Jarboe asked for the agent’s age, and received a response that she was 14.
“(Jarboe) stated he knew sex between them would be illegal but that simply meant they needed to be careful about being caught,” Jarboe’s plea agreement said. “He sent the undercover agent a screenshot of a Google search result indicating sexual contact between them is a crime.”
Court records indicate that the agent attempted to divert the conversation away from sexual matters and indicated that she felt pressured, but Jarboe persisted, sending the agent “grooming material” that included a chart of sexual positions and a picture of his exposed genitals on Jan. 19.
Jarboe asked to meet the purported juvenile at her residence for sex in Bowling Green and he traveled to an apartment complex where he believe the child resided on Feb. 2.
Police arrested Jarboe when he arrived there, and a search of his vehicle turned up flowers and two boxes of condoms, court records show.
The charges to which Jarboe pleaded guilty carry a minimum penalty of 10 years in prison.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Kentucky indicated in the plea agreement that it would seek a punishment on the low end of federal sentencing guidelines for Jarboe.
A sentencing hearing before U.S. District Court Chief Judge Greg Stivers is set for Jan. 27.
