Library launching new “survival” series

To tame fears of tornadoes, nuclear explosions and, perhaps, adulthood, Warren County Public Library will debut a new educational series on life preparedness this month.
“Ready, Set, Prep” will feature an array of folks involved in preparing for emergencies, health insurance and who knows? The library is still seeking ideas.
“We’ll go along with that new year, new you theme,” said Rob Hankins, communications director at the Warren County Public Library. “The goal behind this is to give opportunities to prep for the unexpected.”
First up, the library will welcome Caitlyn French, a meteorologist with the Warren County Emergency Management, on Jan. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bob Kirby Branch.
French will discuss how to handle traumatic situations, such as severe weather, and how to create an emergency kit. For the latter, French will teach residents how to prioritize budget expenses on a monthly basis for the calendar year – as an emergency kit can be a considerable cost.
“We’re really thrilled to have her, I think she’s going to be an excellent person to kick off this series,” Hankins said.
If interested, individuals can register online ahead of time at warrenpl.org. The event is free and open to the public.
Next month, Misty Clark Vantrease of Kentucky Elder Law will discuss long-term care planning on topics such as Medicaid, probate, asset preservation and the legal documents all adults should have.
“We’re going to be approaching it … from the perspective of what adults need to know,” Hankins said. “I think it’s going to be a valuable perspective.”
For people who can’t afford to hire a lawyer, the event will also serve as an introduction to elder law while providing an opportunity to ask questions in an open forum.
In future months, the library will consider a self-defense class, featuring a man who built a bunker in his own home – the guy that initially sparked the idea for a life preparedness series – and anything else the community is interested in.
“If people do have any ideas or suggestions, we’re open to receiving those,” Hankins said. “Not only this series, but in general.
“We’re really excited about this. We hope other people will be too.”
