Multiple fire departments worked to contain a fire that broke out Monday in a Warren County field and burned more than 120 acres.

The Smiths Grove Volunteer Fire Department said firefighters arrived and found flames more than 12 feet tall moving swiftly across the field. An equipment malfunction that occurred while a farmer was baling straw caused the fire, the fire department said.

The Smiths Grove department said Tuesday that some piles of straw may still be visibly burning, but the larger fire is under control and being monitored.

The Gott and Richardsville volunteer fire departments assisted at the scene, along with Kentucky State Police, the Smiths Grove Police Department and local farmers who helped to create a firebreak that slowed the progress of the field fire.
