Greenwood High School has been bustling with Natcher Elementary School students this week.
Kids in Natcher’s drama club are performing in Greenwood’s auditorium this weekend and have been rehearsing there during the past few days.
Neesa Richardson and Ashley Christopher, third-grade teachers at Natcher, started the club in January.
“It gives students the opportunity to perform,” Richardson said. “I’ve seen so many of them at Public Theatre of Kentucky productions and I thought, ‘our kids could do this.’ ”
In the spring, the group performed “Charlotte’s Web.” This weekend, they’re putting on “Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs of the Black Forest,” a comedic take on the fairy tale.
So many students wanted to be involved that the show has two casts, Christopher said. Each cast has been rehearsing once a week since the middle of August.
Christopher said it’s been a really rewarding experience for both her and the kids.
“They love it,” she said. “I mean, you can just see it all over their faces that they’re having fun.”
Allison Kessler, 10, a fifth-grader who plays Snow White, said at first the title role seemed like a lot of work and she wasn’t sure if she wanted it, but she studied her lines every night and stuck with it.
“I like when you just get on stage and act like someone you’re not,” Kessler said. “I think it’s really cool because you get to do something that you wouldn’t be able to do otherwise.”
Third-grader Abby Green, 8, plays Weepy, one of the dwarfs. She said she really likes her part – she gets to do funny voices and make faces.
She enjoys the drama club because “you get to meet different people and make new friends,” she said.
Several businesses have sponsored the show, and parents have provided everything else needed for the play, Christopher said.
“The community and parents have been really helpful,” she said.
Performances will be at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, at 7 p.m. Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $5 for adults and $2 for kids.
