Daily News earns ‘General Excellence’ designation

- The Daily News garnered numerous awards in the Kentucky Press Association journalism contest.
The Bowling Green Daily News garnered a “General Excellence” designation for daily newspapers in the annual Kentucky Press Association journalism contest for 2023.
The KPA held its annual convention last week in Bowling Green, with a final awards ceremony Friday at the Sloan Convention Center.
Competing in the division for large daily newspapers, the Daily News and its staff earned 16 awards for 2023 work. The paper only trailed the state’s two largest newspapers, the Louisville Courier-Journal and Lexington Herald-Leader, in General Excellence.
“We are extremely pleased that the hard work of our staff continues to be recognized by our peers in the industry,” Daily News General Manager Joe Imel said. “Our staff strives to ensure that the Daily News continues to be the leading source of news in southcentral Kentucky, and these awards are a fitting acknowledgment of their efforts.”
The Daily News swept the best special section category, winning first place for the BG STRONG section printed on the anniversary of the 2021 tornadoes that ripped the region. The Daily News basketball preview section produced by sports editor Jeff Nations and reporter Micheal Compton garnered second-place honors.
Individual awards went to:
Nations, first place for best ledes;
Reporter Don Sergent, second place for best ledes;
Copy editor/photographer Caleb Lowndes, first place for sports picture;
Photographer Grace Ramey, third place for picture essay, second and third place for sports picture essay, certificate of merit for breaking news photo;
Reporter Sarah Michels, second place, best ongoing/extended coverage for her “Troubled Waters” series;
Imel, second place for feature photo, second place for picture essay;
Managing Editor Wes Swietek, second place for best editorial writer, third place for best editorial page, second place for best front page, third place, best editorial page.
