Community meeting to feature Smiths Grove, county leaders

Whether you’re pulling in from Smiths Grove-Scottsville Road or simply passing by on Interstate 65, you can tell at a glance how the recent opening of gargantuan gas station and convenience store Buc-ee’s has changed the complexion of Smiths Grove.
More development might be in store for the small northern Warren County community, and local officials are inviting community members to talk it out next week.
A Smiths Grove community meeting is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Smiths Grove Fire Department, Station 1, 120 S. Main St.
An announcement about the meeting posted last week on the Warren County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page states that the meeting will provide an update for attendees on activities at the sheriff’s office as well as a discussion regarding community growth and traffic impact.
Those latter issues are likely front-of-mind for several Smiths Grove residents; in addition to the opening of Buc-ee’s, Tennessee-based JR Builders has submitted an application to the City-County Planning Commission to build a 265-lot subdivision on 76 acres along the city’s Hedge Street close to land eyed by Warren County Public Schools for a future elementary school.
“I thought it would be a good time to update folks on some new things the sheriff’s office has going on and talk about anything in the community we can jointly work on,” Warren County Sheriff Brett Hightower said. “With increased traffic in Smiths Grove and a lot of other things, this is a good opportunity for feedback on different things related to county growth.”
Other officials scheduled to be on hand for the community meeting include Smiths Grove Mayor David Stiffey, Smiths Grove Police Chief Jason Franks, Fourth District Magistrate Rex McWhorter and Joe Plunk, chief district engineer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
