The official opening of Hillary Clinton’s campaign office in Bowling Green drew about 40 people to 1824 Nashville Road on Monday afternoon, a day before the West Virginia primary – which she’s expected to win easily – and eight days before her Kentucky match-up with Barack Obama, in which she also leads.

The majority-female crowd, led in victory chants by a regional campaign organizer, were undaunted by the news that she’s lost the lead in Democratic superdelegates, as well as in regular pledged delegates.

“If I’m for somebody, I’m for them,” said Marilyn Gaines, wife of Warren County Sheriff Jerry “Peanuts” Gaines. “Win, lose or draw, I’m for them.”

Ashley Bland, a Western Kentucky University student from Russellville, said that she was determined to vote for Hillary Clinton this year, whether she was on the ballot or not.

“As soon as Bill Clinton got out of office, I wanted Hillary Clinton in,” Bland said.

She’s been volunteering since May 7, joining others waving signs on Russellville Road and working the phones, she said.

House Speaker Jody Richards, D-Bowling Green, announced that Clinton’s headquarters will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and urged her supporters to keep volunteering their time to canvass and make calls.

He supports her for four reasons, he said: experience, knowledge of the issues, commitment to the race and people of the United States, and her “courage to fight on.”

Richards said he expected another Clinton in the White House to bring back the conditions under Bill Clinton, when Americans could afford gasoline and didn’t worry about their homes being foreclosed upon.

“It was the best time in the history of the United States,” he said.

Bland said Clinton’s support in places like Kentucky show she still has a chance at the Democratic nomination, even if that means a convention-floor fight in August.

“I think that the people are on her side,” she said. “Fight till the end.”
