Shelby Worthington is like a kid in a candy shop. She’s got plenty of choices that make her happy when it comes to throwing up sets for her teammates.
The 2010 edition of the Lady Gators volleyball team isn’t just a one-girl show. Outside hitters Courtney Smith and Samantha Mosher are powerful strikers that give setter Worthington options at the net.
“Yes, it’s a lot better,” Worthington said after an earlier season win in which five of her teammates recorded kills. “Mosher was strong last year, but offseason club really helped her out, she’s gotten a lot better – it’s nice.”
Worthington recorded 132 assists this past weekend at the Kentucky Challenge Invitational in Louisville. She also holds the school record for most assists in a game (12), match (60), season (1,077) and career (2,093).
But even with the big numbers, Worthington said she’s still working to get better.
“Right now I’m trying to work on my defense, I’ve been kinda inconsistent with that the past couple years. So I’m workin’ on my defense and being consistent with where my sets are.”
Worthington and the Gators will be back in action this weekend at the Bluegrass Invitational.
