“The biggest influence in my works comes from growing up in New York. The walls of the city with it’s posters pasted over posters, decade after decade. The dirt, grime, graffiti and the natural weathering of the walls themselves, gives me the inspiration for the mix of my collages,” stated Matt Samone.
Working with his collected papers and cardboards, Matt uses layers of paper and cardboard with pen and ink and/or acrylics for figures and designs, layering them into the theme that is sometimes predetermined but more often created on the spot as his instinct and intuition flows. “I am always looking for and collecting interesting ticket stubs, colors, receipts, interesting pieces of cardboard with a special texture or information stamped on the side and setting these aside for future works”, stated Matt. “I especially like to browse the antique shops for their unique and weathered materials”. Mr. Samone’s has been working in sizes ranging from 6” by 6” to 16” by 20”, but said that he has some larger more elaborate works in mind for the near future.
Mr. Samone attended of the Fashion Institute of Technology and Illustration and the State University of New York at New Paltz where he studied Fine Arts and Graphic Design.
Matt Samone last exhibited his works at 556 Morris Alley along with Andee Rudloff in the World’s Greatest Studio Tour and Art Sale this past November. In May he had his own show at the Capitol Arts where he exhibited 23 pieces. He sold 16 pieces there and acquired future commission work.
There was an article written about him in the “Step By Step” Graphics Magazine in the March/April issue in 2002. The ISPOT, a promotional site for illustrators, saw his piece in the magazine and has asked him to join. He said he is getting his works together for that and is going to join in hopes of finding more markets for his work.
Matt moved to Bowling Green three years ago and is presently employed at Hobby Lobby here, where he said that he is at least around his element. Matt sees himself making a living off his art in the future. “I am hoping to balance fine arts with gallery exhibits and graphics for books and magazines”.
