Smith pleaded guilty in April to eight counts of theft by deception over $300 – only months earlier he had announced his intention to own and operate the Kentucky Mavericks, an American Basketball Association franchise that was to have played its home games in Bowling Green.

Team management, however, failed to secure Western Kentucky University’s E.A. Diddle Arena for home dates, and soon after Smith announced he was leaving the team, allegations surfaced that he had passed bad checks totaling more than $108,000.
