Workers at the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society’s Hildreth Adoption Center have been caring for dozens of dogs and cats rescued from a recently closed shelter in Adair County, and several dozen additional dogs were rescued Sunday from the shelter and brought here to be treated and prepared for adoption.
Shelters in Warren County and elsewhere in the state have stepped in to care for animals rescued from Clean Slate Animal Rescue in Columbia.
That shelter was closed last month and its owner, David Howery, has been charged with 295 counts of animal cruelty.
Lorri Hare, executive director of the humane society in Warren County, said 175 dogs and cats were rescued from the shelter two weeks ago.
On Sunday, the Humane Society of the United States and United Animal Nations rescued 88 dogs that remained at the Adair County shelter.
“HSUS is bringing down 10 or 12 volunteers and UAN is bringing their big rigs down, their semi rescue trucks and taking these animals to approved facilities all over the U.S.,” Hare said.
The Hildreth Adoption Center has been the drop-off point for many of the rescued animals, with volunteers, veterinarians and others helping restore the health of the rescued animals through vaccinations, flea and tick treatments and other efforts.
“It’s been worth it just in the week we’ve had these animals to see how much better they are within a week,” Hare said. “We’ve had about seven of them leave our shelter (for adoption). A lot of them don’t look that great, missing all that fur – it’s almost like they know you’re trying to save them.”
Because of the large number of animals and the extent of the help they need, the humane society has been seeking donations of several items for its shelter.
Hare said the shelter is in great need of paper towels, bleach, cedar shavings, cloth wipes and office supplies.
Drop-off points have been set up at the shelter at 1924 Louisville Road; RePets at 600 U.S. 31-W By-Pass, Suite 20; Double Dogs Chow House at 1780 Scottsville Road; and Dog’s Day Out at 4800 Sunnyside Gott Road.
