400 Mile Sale back on region roadways

Published 12:00 am Thursday, June 4, 2009

U.S. Hwy. 68 will turn into a shopper’s paradise this weekend during the annual 400 Mile Sale.

The sale continues through Sunday in 60 communities along the route, which goes from Paducah to Maysville, said Debby Spencer, president of We Make Things Happen Corp., which coordinates the sale.

“This started in 2004. We did it as an economic development project to encourage people off the interstate,” she said. “The heart of it runs through Bowling Green. There are a lot of little cities (that participate). It’s wonderful. It’s right in the heart of small-town USA.”

The sale draws shoppers from as far away as California, Canada and Alaska, Spencer said.

“There are lots of antiques. People are pulling things out of their attics,” she said. “We encourage people to work together. The yard sales tend to cluster on the outskirts of the community.”

During the sale, shoppers often find out more things about the community, including favorite restaurants, Spencer said.

“We want to encourage them to come back again,” she said.

Shoppers can also attend community events in conjunction with the sale. One southcentral Kentucky event will be the 19th annual Antique Engine and Tractor Show on Friday and Saturday at Auburn City Park.

Activities will start with displays of tractors and antique equipment at 8 a.m. Friday. A tractor pull featuring modified antique tractors will be at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, a parade through downtown Auburn at 10:30 a.m. will be followed by an antique tractor pull at noon and a Kiddie Pull featuring children on pedal tractors at 1:30 p.m.

There will also be ax throwers, wood choppers, toy tractor displays and sales and concessions throughout the weekend.

“It brings back memories to older people and shows young people how things used to be,” said Drexel Johnson, president of Logan County Antique Gas Engine and Tractor Club, which organizes the event. “It’s family oriented.”
