MTSU claims series win over WKU with walk-off victory

Western Kentucky dropped the Conference USA softball series finale, 4-3, against Middle Tennessee on Sunday in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Macy Gregor hit her first home run as a Hilltopper (21-18 overall, 7-10 CUSA) while Kennedy Stinson tallied her fifth of the season for a two-RBI shot. ‘
Tied 3-all in the bottom of the seventh inning, MTSU (21-22 overall, 9-9 CUSA) claimed the win with a walk-off home run.
WKU’s Annie White singled to third base to set the stage for Stinson. With the first pitch of her at-bat, Stinson sent the ball over the left-field wall for a two-run homer to put the Hilltoppers up, 2-0 in the second inning.
Sophomore Erica Houge earned her 10th start of the season for the Hilltoppers and after a 1-2-3 first inning, generated two ground outs and her first strikeout of the day to keep MTSU off the board.
In the bottom of the third, MTSU scored three runs after a home run and two back-to-back hits.
Down 3-2 in the top of the fifth, Gregor swung on the first pitch of her at-bat and snuck the ball just over the right-field wall. Gregor’s home run was both her first of the season and first as a Hilltopper.
Both sides were scoreless across the sixth, with MTSU’s Jana Want hitting the walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
WKU pitchers Rylan Smith and Erica Houge combined for five strikeouts on the day.
The last multi-home run game for the Tops was on April 5 against Kennesaw State. Sunday’s game was the first time this season that all home runs were hit by freshmen.
The Hilltoppers will conclude their eight-game road trip in Lexington on Tuesday as they take on Kentucky. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
