Public input sought for parks master plan

Bowling Green Parks and Recreation needs your help in identifying future projects across the city as BGPR begins to roll out its ten-year master plan.
The master plan input is a way for the department to find out what projects the public wants to see over the next few years.
Haley Parrett, parks planner, told the Daily News the previous master plan helped bring the Riverfront Park project to the forefront, along with whitewater rafting facilities and the expansion of pickleball facilities.
“We’re looking forward to those next big ideas coming to the surface and seeing what the next ten years of Bowling Green parks and rec will look like,” Parrett said.
Bowling Green city commissioners last November approved the hiring of consultant firm MKSK to help draft the master plan for $193,000. MKSK has worked with the city before on the separate master plan for Riverfront Park.
BGPR’s previous master plan was created in 2014. City Manager Jeff Meisel said that the city has “pretty much knocked out everything” that was included in that plan, hence the need for the next one.
The engagement process will kick off on Monday during a community engagement session at the Sloan Convention Center from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Parrett said for this meeting, the first of three, BGPR is looking for feedback on how city parks are currently used and what residents want to see down the road.
“That data will be collected by our consultants and they will use that in figuring out what could be potentially added to our parks, what could be renovated, what the needs are,” she said.
A later meeting in June during Duncan Hines Days, Parrett said, will hopefully see some ideas critiqued and during the final community meeting, the overall plan will be presented.
“This is really important because it really creates the platform for where we are headed,” Parrett said. “We’re trying to make sure we’re listening to the community that use our parks.”
The parks department has made some different efforts in recent months to get people involved in the master plan process.
Parrett said BGPR held a “pop-up” at Bowling Green High School during a community fair and some youth sports events across town, which allowed the department to hear from younger generations.
As for what youngsters want, it’s simple:
“More turf fields,” Parrett said, especially for soccer. “They were discussing how popular the turf field is at Lampkin Park, and how crowded it is.
“They wanted more,” she said.
An online survey will be uploaded to bgprmasterplan.com and shared on social media “very soon,” Parrett said. To find more information, visit bgprmasterplan.com.
