The Bowling Green boys’ basketball team continued its dominance in the opening round of the Region 4 Tournament, rolling to an 80-53 win over Glasgow on Tuesday at E.A. Diddle Arena.
Bowling Green built a 24-point lead by halftime and cruised from there, advancing to Monday’s region semifinals.
“I thought we had a good team effort tonight,” Bowling Green coach D.G. Sherrill said. “I thought that first quarter was knocking the rust off. It seemed like about a month ago when we played, so trying to come back in here and get back into a rhythm. It was just a good team effort. I am really proud of our guys. Just got to keep it moving.”
It was the 18th straight win in the opening round of the region tournament for Bowling Green (26-6). The last loss came in 2004 to Monroe County.
“I’ve been blessed to be here in a good program with great players and great assistant coaches,” Sherrill said. “Last year was hard. That locker room was hard and we know we have a lot of work to do to even give ourselves a chance, but that has kind of motivated us and fueled us. Any success we have had over here over the years it really is about my guys.”
Playing for the first time in 11 days, the Purples showed a little rust in the early going — trailing briefly 3-2 before back-to-back 3s from Kadyn Carpenter and Jace Wardlow gave BG the lead for good.
Bowling Green pushed the advantage to 11-5 late in the first before Glasgow (5-23) scored five straight to pull within a point. The Purples ended the quarter on a high note as Deuce Bailey’s layup beat the horn — and it was all Purples from there.
A 13-0 run by BG extended the margin to 30-13 midway through the second, with the advantage ballooning to 42-18 by halftime.
The offensive efficiency continued in the third quarter with a 3-pointer from Braylon Banks making the score 52-22. The lead would grow to 67-32 late in the quarter, starting the KHSAA-mandated running clock and allowing the Purples to empty the bench down the stretch.
“If we can keep guys in front of us, contest shots and crash the glass it gives us an opportunity to get the ball out and go,” Sherrill said. “We are not passing the hotel lobby test. We walk in, we don’t have 6-5, 6-6 guys. We’ve got 6-4 (Hurt) and Kirkwood and our young guy (Arlando Davis). After that we are all 6-0, 6-1. So we’ve got to play in a different gear and we’ve got to pressure the basketball.”
Bowling Green finished the night shooting 49.2%, with four players finishing in double figures. Joe Hurt led the way with 16 points. Bailey, Carpenter and Banks added 14 points each.
“We woke up with the same mindset,” Carpenter said. “We’ve got a job to finish. We can’t go out like last year. Anybody in front of us, anything can happen.”
Josiah Driver led Glasgow with 10 points.
“A tough night for us,” Glasgow coach Brandon Stockton said. “It’s been a long season for us, but I don’t think after the season we had that anybody expected us to be here. I’m really proud of the guys that got us here again. This senior group — a bunch of guys that everybody said couldn’t win ballgames, but they’ve got a district championship, a district runner-up and have been to the region twice. I am very proud of them.”
Bowling Green advances to face Russell County at 8 p.m. on Monday. The Purples are 6-0 all-time against the Lakers — including 3-0 in the region tournament. This will be the first meeting between the two schools since the 2016 region semifinals.
