Western Kentucky senior Sofia Blanco was named the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, and Blanco and Rachel Hermanova were named the CUSA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
“Very happy to see Sofia get Athlete of the Week, and Sofia and Rachel get Doubles Team of the Week in Conference USA,” WKU coach Greg Davis said in a news release. “I think it’s historic for the program. We’re very proud of their accomplishments, not just last week but throughout their career.”
The two helped the Lady Toppers to three wins last weekend. WKU defeated Eastern Illinois 7-0 on Friday, and followed with a 4-1 victory over CUSA foe Jacksonville State in the first match of a doubleheader on Sunday and a 7-0 victory over Southern Illinois in the second match on Sunday.
Blanco went 4-0 in her singles matches last week, playing in the No. 1 and 2 positions during that time, and she has now won her last six matches to sit at 10-2 this spring. Blanco claimed a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Samford’s Margaret Jaraczewski on Wednesday from the No. 2 position, and followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Eastern Illinois’ Ornella Lomenzo at the No. 2 position on Friday, a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win over Jax State’s Lea Erenda from the No. 2 position on WKU’s first match on Sunday and a 6-2, 6-1 win over Southern Indiana’s Anais Negrail from the No. 1 position on Sunday in the second match of the team’s doubleheader. She now has 50 career singles wins, which ranks second in program history.
Blanco and Hermanova went 3-1 last week together in doubles play. The two defeated Eastern Illinois’ Luisa Renovales-Salazar/Charleigh Fay 6-0 on Friday, and followed by defeating Jax State’s Irene Artigas/Aneka Patel 6-3 in their first match on Sunday and Southern Indiana’s Anais Negrail/Madison Windham 6-0 in their second match on Sunday. Blanco and Hermanova were ranked 85th nationally at the time, and their ranking was the first ITA spring doubles ranking in program history. Blanco is now at 45 career doubles wins, which ranks second in program history, and Hermanova now has 23 career doubles wins, which ranks 12th in program history.
It marks the second and third weekly awards the Lady Toppers have won this season. Sophomores Emily Schut and Mia Miranda were named the CUSA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 29. The three weekly awards and the most the Lady Toppers have won in a single season since joining CUSA, and it is only the second time the program has claimed multiple weekly awards in a single season. WKU has claimed eight CUSA weekly awards under Davis.
The Lady Toppers are 9-4 this season, with wins in their last three matches. WKU is scheduled to host FIU on Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park.
