Western Kentucky’s women’s tennis team claimed a 4-1 victory over Jacksonville State and a 7-0 victory over Southern Indiana on Sunday at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park.
The wins moved the Lady Toppers to 9-4 overall, 7-3 at home and 1-0 against Conference USA teams this season.
“It was good winning today and getting two good wins,” WKU coach Greg Davis said in a news release. “Coming into this match, we talked about starting off March with some momentum – our goal each month is to have a winning record – so to get off to a 2-0 start, get a good conference win over a really good Jax State team in the first match and then follow it up.
“We were fatigued in the second match, but we fought through and gave a good effort, I thought. It was good that we got to give everybody a chance to play. That’s going to really help us as we go through the rest of the season.”
The matches were the fourth and fifth in WKU’s current nine-match homestand. WKU has gone 4-1 during the homestand, with wins over Missouri State, Eastern Illinois, Jax State and Southern Indiana. The loss came against Samford, 4-3.
WKU has now won the doubles point in nine of its 13 matches this season, after claiming the doubles point in both matches on Sunday.
No. 85 Sofia Blanco and Rachel Hermanova improved to 7-5 together this season in doubles. Blanco’s doubles wins were the 44th and 45th of her WKU career. She is second on WKU’s career doubles wins list. Hermanova’s doubles wins were the 22nd and 23rd of her career. She ranks 12th in program history in the category and is one win away from being tied for 11th in program history in career doubles wins.
Mariana Zegada claimed the 36th and 37th doubles wins of her career, putting her in a tie for third on the program’s career doubles wins list with Cora-Lynn von Dungern.
Blanco has won six straight singles matches and is now 10-2 this season. She is now at 50 career singles wins, which is second-most in program history.
“I think we came in with a lot of energy for our first conference match against Jacksonville (State),” Blanco said. “We were all cheering ourselves up and just playing hard and our attitude made a difference.”
Mia Miranda improved to 7-5 in singles this season with her two wins on Sunday.
Zegada improved to 6-4 this season in singles and now has 29 career singles wins, which ranks ninth in program history. She is now one win away from being tied for eighth.
Sunskrithi Damera has now won six consecutive singles matches and is 7-3 this season. She now has 27 career singles wins, which is 10th-most in program history.
Emily Schut improved to 9-1 this season with her win over Southern Indiana.
Elizabeth Sobieski claimed her second singles win with the Lady Toppers with her win over Southern Indiana.
“We definitely had a lot of tenacity,” Sobieski said. “It’s tough coming in after close ones, but just to come in swinging hard, playing hard, it is why the matches went our way today.”
The Lady Toppers will face Florida International on Friday in the sixth match of a nine-match homestand. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
