A Bowling Green man who was shot and killed early Sunday at an apartment by the resident may have entered the wrong apartment by mistake, according to city police.
Matthew Maggart, 23, lived in the Covington Oaks apartment complex on 1317 Scottsville Road and attended Western Kentucky University.
According to the Bowling Green Police Department, officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at an apartment there shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday.
As police traveled to the complex, the caller remained on the line with a dispatcher and reported that someone was kicking the door to their apartment.
Police said that the gunshot victim, later identified as Maggart, made entry into the apartment and was shot and killed by the resident, whose name has not been released by BGPD.
In a post on BGPD’s Facebook account Sunday morning, police said evidence suggested that Maggart was impaired at the time and mistakenly entered the wrong apartment.
In a text message sent Monday morning, BGPD spokesman Officer Ronnie Ward said that investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy for Maggart.
WKU spokesman Jace Lux issued a statement Monday on behalf of the university.
“WKU is working directly with students who may be most affected by this loss,” Lux said in an e-mail. “We encourage any member of our campus community in need of grief support to seek help from the WKU Counseling Center by calling (270) 745-3159. We extend our deepest condolences to Matthew’s family, friends and all those who knew him.”
