McAfee, Cawthorn lead the way in all-region selections

Warren Central’s Robert McAfee and Franklin-Simpson’s LaReesha Cawthorn were named Region 4 players of the year by the region coaches, leading the way on the first team all-region selections.

McAfee enters the postseason averaging 21.1 points a game and 6.6 rebounds — leading the Dragons to a 22-5 overall record. Cawthorn led Franklin-Simpson to a 23-2 record, averaging 21 points a game and 10.8 rebounds.

McAfee is a finalist for Kentucky Mr. Basketball, while Cawthorn is a finalist for Miss Basketball.

McAfee is joined on the first team all-region by Clinton County’s Cannon Young, South Warren’s Griffin Rardin, Bowling Green’s Luke Idlett and Warren East’s Kaleb Prince.

Second team all-region selections include Metcalfe County’s Cade Button, Warren Central’s Jarek Kirk, Bowling Green’s Samson Hightower and Cumberland County’s Ray Harwood.

Third team all-region selections include Greenwood’s Nick Simpson, Russell County’s Mayes Gosser, Franklin-Simpson’s Ja’Kai Partinger, Bowling Green’s Jace Wardlow and Warren Central’s Armani Byrd.

Clinton County’s Nick Irwin was named the boys’ region coach of the year after guiding the Bulldogs to a 26-2 regular season.

Cawthorn is joined on the girls’ first team by South Warren’s McLaine Hudson, Allen County-Scottsville’s Avery Morris, Metcalfe County’s Kassady London and Bowling Green’s Katy Smiley.

Second team all-region selections include Todd County Central’s Alexis Taylor, Barren County’s Shelby Byrd, Cumberland County’s Madi Cooksey, Warren East’s Kennedy Lawson and Metcalfe County’s Jozie Allen.

Third team all-region selections include Franklin-Simpson’s Kloie Smith, Monroe County’s Sarah Thompson, Russell County’s Rachel Bolin, Logan County’s Brenley Adler and Barren County’s Katie Elmore.

Franklin-Simpson’s Ashley Taylor was named the girls’ region co-coach of the year, joined by Metcalfe County’s Heidi Coleman. The Lady Hornets enter the postseason with a 23-5 record.
