Local swimmers advance to state finals

Several local swimmers advanced to the state final swim meet after earning top-three finishes in the opening round of the state tournament on Saturday at Bowling Green.

Swimmers from Bowling Green, Greenwood and South Warren advanced to the state finals. The state field will also include next best 15 times across the state, with those entrants still to be determined.

The state meet begins on Feb. 20 at the Lancaster Aquatic Center at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

Bowling Green’s Riley Crowe earned wins in the 200-yard freestyle and 500 free, while South Warren’s Ella Payne earned a win in the 100 backstroke and joined Bella Waters, Avery Beil and Anna Satterfield to win the girls’ 400 free relay. Payne, Beil, Satterfield and  Chloe Parsons also clinched a spot to the state finals with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay.

Payne added a third-place finish in the 100 free.

Satterfield earned a third-place finish in the 200 free, while Biel with a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley. Greenwood’s Brianne Flikkema finished second in the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke.

Flikkema, Maddie Boyer, Leela Kaul and Erin Hogan advanced with a third-place finish in the 200 free relay.

On the boys’ side, Bowling Green’s Warren Woodall finished first in the 100 fly and second in the 50 free. Woodall joined Alfonso Verduzco, Matias Verduzco and James Dinan to win the 400 free relay and finish second in the 200 free relay.

South Warren’s Kenan Aganovic earned a win in the 500 free, while South Warren’s Brian Bosse earned a win in the 100 back.

Aganovic joined Bosse, Noah Walters and Lari Skeric to finish second in the 200 medley relay and second in the 400 medley relay, while earning a spot in the 200 individual medley after a second-place finish.

Alfonso Verduzco finished third in the 200 free and second in the 500 free. Greenwood’s Cade Mosely finished third in the 200 individual medley and the 500 free.
