A federal grand jury has indicted a man accused of traveling from Owensboro to Bowling Green for what he believed would be a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old.
Corey James Jarboe, 29, of Owensboro, was formally charged with attempted online enticement of a minor and attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor in an indictment that was unsealed Friday.
Jarboe was booked Thursday into Warren County Regional Jail and is scheduled to appear this Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Bowling Green for an arraignment and a detention hearing.
The indictment claims that Jarboe knowingly attempted to “persuade, induce and entice an individual who had not attained the age of 18 years” to engage in sexual activity between Jan. 18 and Feb. 2.
The federal charges arose from similar charges leveled against him in state court following his arrest on Feb. 2 by Kentucky State Police.
According to an arrest citation, KSP detectives conducting an undercover Internet Crimes Against Children investigation discovered that Jarboe was talking online with someone who he believed to be a 14-year-old girl.
During the course of the chats, Jarboe sent a picture of his genitals and asked the child to send him nude photos of herself, and talked about wanting to have sex with the juvenile, the citation said.
Jarboe made it known online that he was going to drive from Owensboro to meet the juvenile in Bowling Green, and on Feb. 2 he arrived at the apartment complex where he believed the child resided, court records show.
“KSP made contact with Jarboe at that time,” Jarboe’s arrest citation said. “Condoms and a rose were located in plain view on the passenger side seat and center console.”
Jarboe agreed to a police interview, during which he admitted to sending the illicit image and knowing that the person with whom he was chatting held themselves out as 14 years of age, records show.
“Jarboe admitted that he knew what he was doing was wrong and illegal based on the child’s age,” the arrest citation said.
Attempted online enticement of a minor is punishable by a term of 10 years to life imprisonment, while attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
