Mystery of poisoned candy reported in 1921 DN

“Mystery still surrounds attempt to kill family of Calvin Hatler” with candy injected with poison that was mailed to them, according to a July 23, 1921, Daily News article.

Mrs. Calvin Hatler, her 17-year-old daughter, Allie, and her 8-year-old son, Roy, were all poisoned by candy delivered through the Smiths Grove post office.

All three were out of danger, but Warren and Edmonson county authorities were working hard to find the person who mailed the poisoned candies. The family thought they knew the sender of the candy and that was why they ate it.

Mr. Hatler declined to make a statement.
