Paul Powell Sharp and Hazel McCoy Sharp

BOWLING GREEN – Paul Powell Sharp, 96, and Hazel McCoy Sharp, 96, both of Bowling Green, passed away peacefully at Hospice House of Southern Kentucky. Mr. Sharp passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024. Mrs. Sharp passed away shortly thereafter on Sunday, January 7, 2024.

Never far apart in life over their 75 years of marriage, neither were they far apart in their passings. They were both natives of Burkesville, KY, where they grew up knowing one another since age 11.

They were preceded in death by their eldest son, Michael McCoy Sharp.

Mr. Sharp was a son of the late Paul E. and Maude Powell Sharp. In addition to his parents and his son, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Rankin Sharp, Jack Sharp, Richard Sharp and Dave Sharp.

Mrs. Sharp was a daughter of the late Jim F. and Vela Booher McCoy. In addition to her parents and her son, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ronda McCoy Talley.

The Sharps were both graduates of Cumberland County High School. Mr. Sharp joined the Merchant Marines at age 17 and served during World War II. Mr. Sharp attended Western Kentucky University and Mrs. Sharp was a graduate of Bowling Green Business University.

Paul was a farmer for decades and an avid gardener, keeping a robust and thriving garden where he spent hours each day well into his nineties. Hazel was a homemaker and wonderful cook and baker, which she also enjoyed throughout her life.

Paul and Hazel were constants in their children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s lives, providing comfort, humor and an example of enduring love. They were Methodist by faith.

A graveside service for Mr. and Mrs. Sharp will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, January 11 at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm on Thursday, January 11 at Johnson Vaughn Phelps Funeral Home.

Mr. and Mrs. Sharp are survived by a daughter, Sharon Sharp Valk (Andre); a son, Larry Greg Sharp (Pam); a daughter-in-law, Vicki Hinton Sharp; four grandchildren, Michelle Sharp, Neill Myers Caudill (Gray), Brian Sharp (Karimeh) and Erin Coomes; eight great-grandchildren, Virginia Neill Caudill, Myers Gray Caudill, Sophia Grace Midkiff, Michael Sharp, Solenne Sharp, Audrey Coomes, Liam Coomes and Emma Coomes; a sister-in-law, Linda Lea Sharp; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to these survivors, Mrs. Sharp is also survived by her sister, Julia Goff. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Southern Kentucky.
