Western Kentucky’s women’s soccer team scored late against Arkansas State, but it wasn’t enough as the Red Wolves secured a 2-1 win against the host Hilltoppers on Sunday.
Arkansas State (3-1-2) scored early and then took a 2-0 lead against WKU (2-4-0) late in the second half. The Hilltoppers scored just seconds later, but couldn’t find an equalizer in the final minutes.
“For us, we haven’t been a team that’s been very good in the last several years where we’re down a goal or two goals,” WKU coach Jason Neidell said in a news release. “To be able to fight back and put ourselves in a position to possibly tie the game up was great.”
The Red Wolves got off to a hot start, scoring their first goal in the fourth minute of the game. Despite the 1-0 scoring deficit, WKU and Arkansas State ended the first half tied in shots at four each.
In the second half, WKU outshot Arkansas State 6-3. The Red Wolves added to their lead in the 71st minute, but 36 seconds later Kayla Meyer got around an Arkansas State defender in the box and found the back of the net. It was Meyer’s fourth goal of the season and the 11th of her career.
Georgia Liapis led WKU in shots with four on the day while Meyer added three. Overall, WKU outshot Arkansas State 10-7 in the match.
WKU Soccer will close out non-conference play against Ohio University on Thursday at the WKU Soccer Complex. It will also be Senior Day for the Hilltoppers. First kick is set for 7 p.m.
