Western Kentucky University’s campus continues to evolve. New structures abound around its 200 acres.

In 2021, WKU demolished Garrett Conference Center.

In GCC’s place, the leadership decided to build Garrett Plaza, aptly named for the university’s second president, Paul Garrett, and his wife, Virginia Garrett.

The plaza has green space, pathways and aesthetic additions on the Hill between Cherry Hall and Hilltop Lot, with a hilltop view.

“When you walk through Cherry Hall out the back and you see this amazing vista, Bowling Green falls away, and you can focus on your studies in the community, and it’s so peaceful,” WKU President Timothy Caboni said Thursday. “And that’s what I want our students to have: places to reflect, to pause, to think, to ponder, to be immersed in thinking and learning – and this just enhances that for our university.”

It’s a positive that the WKU administration is not only focusing on necessary additions and upgrades to facilities and structures on the picturesque campus, but also the need of areas that can be used as a community gathering place of sorts, with a tranquil setting.

If one could go back and walk through the WKU campus in 1980, then compare that to the current day — what a powerful transformation.

WKU students — and the community — have a lot to be proud of about this university.

It has been fascinating to witness the changes on the Hill over the years. The addition of Garrett Plaza just adds more spice to the beauty and the growth of WKU into one of the most beautiful campuses in the country.

Congratulations on the addition and the wise use of space in this what we hope becomes a hub for students.
