On Sept. 17, 1947, the Daily News reported that grocery stores decided to raise the price of milk to 21 cents. The action followed a meeting of local grocers at the Broadway Food Market.
The article said that “grocers lose money handling the project on a 2-cent profit margin, it was pointed out. Operation of ice boxes and breakage of bottles nullify the 2-cent profit, they declared. Other bottled dairy products also took a two-cent price increase, while the cost of cream went from 25 to 30 cents a half pint.”
