On Sept. 23, 1956, the Daily News reported on some unusual aerial events that occurred the day before.
A helicopter landed in Fountain Square, the first time any aircraft had landed on a street downtown. Even stranger, the pilot was given a parking ticket for double-parking his chopper.
Hundreds of spectators gathered as the helicopter landed and took off. The pilot and his passengers were a stunt trio who performed aerial acrobatics from equipment suspended from the helicopter, up to 1,000 feet up and with no safety nets. They were set to perform locally later on the afternoon of publication.
