The owner of a Bowling Green auto dealership is facing prison time after admitting in court to tampering with odometers in his stock of vehicles.

Randy Huff, 58, pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court to four counts of odometer tampering and one count each of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit odometer tampering.

A federal grand jury indicted Huff in 2023 on the criminal charges based on allegations that he conspired with Donnie Wilson and others to alter the odometers of 22 vehicles between June 2018 and January 2023.

According to a copy of Huff’s plea agreement, he directed mechanics to swap out the odometers on used vehicles he purchased for his dealerships for replacement odometers that showed a lower mileage reading.

After the odometers were altered, the vehicles were sold to customers at two dealerships owned and operated by Huff – South Side Auto Sales in Bowling Green and Huff’s Auto Sales in Beaver Dam.

“The actions and misrepresentations of Randy Huff and other employees acting at the direction of Randy Huff resulted in the sale of vehicles with false odometer readings at higher sales prices than buyers would have paid had the true and accurate mileage been disclosed,” Huff’s plea agreement said. “This led to larger profits for Randy Huff.”

According to federal court records, Huff also directed Wilson in 2020 to request a new title for a 2011 Nissan Altima whose odometer had been altered, resulting in the wire fraud charge against Huff.

Wilson has pleaded guilty to the same charges as Huff and awaits sentencing.

The indictment returned against Huff claimed that a 2007 Jeep Cherokee that has 189,520 miles on its odometer when South Side acquired it was sold in 2018 with an odometer reading of 71,576 miles.

At Huff’s Beaver Dam dealership, a 2010 Nissan Xterra that had 211,184 miles put on it when the business acquired it was sold with an odometer reading of 71,835 miles, the indictment stated.

Other vehicles sold at the two dealerships featured altered odometers whose readings were fraudulently reduced by sums of thousands of miles, court records show.

The plea agreement recommends a prison sentence for Huff in the range of 24-30 months and an unspecified fine.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Raymond McGee said in court Tuesday that an amount of restitution to be paid by Huff and items he is to forfeit as a result of his conviction are to be determined.

Huff’s attorney, Scott Cox, requested a sentencing date several months in the future for his client, saying in court that Huff is scheduled to undergo a heart procedure and had a recent operation limiting his movement.

Huff, who is free on pretrial release, used a wheelchair at his hearing Tuesday.

U.S. District Court Chief Judge Greg Stivers directed Huff to return to court May 21 for sentencing.
