Autism CARES Act needs to be reauthorized

I am writing to emphasize the urgent need to reauthorize the Autism CARES Act, which expires in September.
As the foundation for essential support and services, this law is vital for individuals and families in the autism community. Without it, countless autism programs would be discontinued, leaving the autism community with an uncertain future.
Consider my 13-year-old daughter Olivia, who was diagnosed with autism and selective mutism. This law supports intervention programs that aided in Olivia’s development of key social skills. Most recently, our family was reminded of the importance of having health care professionals trained to work with autistic individuals as Olivia went through a life-threatening medical emergency and was hospitalized in critical ICU for eight days. This law ensures critical medical training initiatives are continued and expanded.
And when I think of her future, this law promises additional resources for her unique communication style through the creation of a new Autism Intervention Research Network for communication needs. The services Olivia has received during her life have enabled her to thrive, and the promise of further support through the Autism CARES Act gives us hope for her future.
For two decades, the Autism CARES Act has driven significant advances in autism research, leading to breakthroughs in diagnosis, therapies and lifespan supports. Organizations like Autism Speaks have been pivotal in advocating for these advancements.
Expiration of this law would be devastating to the 1 in 36 children and 1 in 45 adults with autism in the U.S. Its renewal is essential to maintain research momentum and expand services.
Please join Autism Speaks in advocating for this cause. Ask Sen. Mitch McConnell and Chair of the House Subcommittee Rep. Brett Guthrie to use their positions to finalize and pass the Autism CARES Act before Sept. 30.
