Trio of area racers among Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame class

The Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame will hold an induction ceremony for eight new members Saturday in Central City.

This group will be the 15th group of inductees since the inception of the Hall of Fame in 2008. The eight include two drag racing, two oval track, two at- large and one each as visionary and pioneer category.

Drag Racing Inductees• Lynn Ellison, Central City – Ellison has over 200 wins in the five decades he has competed. These include nine national event and 16 divisional wins.

• Irvin Johns, Louisville – Johns began his racing career in 1962. No stranger to the winner’s circle, Johns has been runner-up at the NHRA U.S. Nationals, scored wins at many divisional races and was 2019 NHRA Divison 3 champion.

Oval Inductees• Chuck Barnes Sr., Louisville – Barnes is the all-time win leader at historic Salem Speedway with 55 wins and seven championships. Many of those wins came in both the Stock and Street Stock categories.

• Billy Teegarden, Brooksville – Teegarden scored over 400 career wins during his long career. His racing travels included wins all over the Midwest.

At-Large• Danny Young, Alvaton – Young is an accomplished motorcycle racer who competed and was a gold medalist in the prestigious International Six Day Trials. Young competed in England and Italy, where he was honored to be the first Kentuckian to earn gold medals.

• Calvin Smith, Glasgow – A retired civil engineer, Smith has built cars his whole life. He has built and competed many land speed cars and is a five-time member of the 200-mph club. His skills also include design and construction of street rods.

Visionary• Pete Ausbrooks, Bowling Green – Ausbrooks is a lifelong hot rodder and car builder. His work has been featured many times at the yearly SEMA show and NSRA Builders Showcase. Pete has operated a successful 55-57 Chevy restoration parts business for many years.

Pioneer• Michael Kayrouz, Louisville – Kayrouz grew up in his dad’s Gulf station and became a car enthusiast at an early age. Kayrouz competed at local drag strips from 1963-71 until becoming co-owner of Ohio Valley Raceway. Kayrouz and family have spent many years restoring classic Chrysler cars, is latest being a historic 1965 Plymouth raced by the legendary Butch Leal.

The Kentucky Motorsport Hall of Fame presentation ceremonies will be held starting at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Motorsports Museum in Central City. The event offers free admission with everyone welcome.
