The news is solid for school systems in Warren County and Bowling Green as the state has assessed student performance for 2023.
Both school systems generally outperformed statewide assessment averages in the Kentucky Department of Education’s 2023 School Report Card.
The COVID-19 outbreak, which led to school closings and online learning, still has an impact on students’ academic achievements and learning, but the remnant slowdown’s effects are being mitigated.
The in-depth, complete data on the report are available at kyschoolreportcard.com.
The state has incorporated a new graphic representation of school systems’ performance in the form of a gauge that reflects scores. The graphics, available on kyschoolreportcard.com, give an overall snapshot into performance that is date based on color codes – from worst to best, red, orange, yellow, green and blue.
For Warren County’s school district, elementary schools debuted in yellow, while middle schools and high schools graded green, just one notch below the best, blue.
For the Bowling Green Independent School District, all three levels were at yellow, but scores reflected much improvement.
Improvement is evident in many areas for both districts, which is encouraging and a testament to the efforts of administrators, educators and students.
“We had really worked hard across the district, not just at Teranga Academy, but at all of our schools to really raise that score,” said BGISD Superintendent Gary Fields. “The score is the best we’ve ever had and the most growth we have ever seen.”
Teranga Academy is an English immersion program for junior high and high school students who are multilingual, have lived in the U.S. for three years or less and have had their formal education interrupted will be important in efforts to narrow achievement gaps among English learners.
BGISD faces unique challenges with higher rates of economically disadvantaged students than the state, and 23% of its student body is comprised of English learners.
Both districts are blessed with excellent leaders and a solid foundation is in place to continue to bring students out of, and way beyond, the hurdles that were in place from COVID-19.
We applaud each school system and look forward to seeing improved quality of education in Bowling Green and Warren County in the years to come.
