Atmos to replace aging pipes on numerous BG streets

Atmos Energy announced Tuesday that it will soon be performing a pair of pipe replacement projects in Bowling Green.

The work is slated to begin this month and will see a total of 6,464 feet of natural gas pipe and 74 service mains – lines that run from the street to gas meters – replaced.

According to Kay Coomes, manager of public affairs for Atmos Energy, the pipes being swapped out were first installed in 1959.

“Atmos Energy is committed to the safety and reliability of our system,” Mike Close, Bowling Green operations manager, said in a release. “It is our number one priority.”

According to the release, the first project will replace 2,634 feet of pipe and 26 service mains. The project is expected to be completed in January with an estimated cost of $359,000.

The second project will replace 3,830 feet pipe and 48 mains at a cost of $437,000 with work estimated to finish in late March.

The company will work with public officials to notify the public if road closures become necessary. Coomes said that residents will be notified of any work that may temporarily interrupt their service.

The streets impacted by the first project are:

•Johnson Drive from Old Morgantown Road to Dennis Way

•Madison Street from Plain Avenue to Rochester Avenue

•Mimosa Alley from Regents Avenue to State Street

•Barber Way from Glendale Drive to Smallhouse Road

•East 14th Avenue from the U.S. 31 W By-Pass to Magnolia Street

•East 14th Avenue Alley between East 14th Avenue and East 13th Avenue

The streets impacted by the second project are:

•North Sunrise Drive from Glen Lily Road to 1468 N. Sunrise Drive

•Woodway Street

•Old Morgantown Road from Johnson Drive to Virginia Drive

•Virginia Drive from Old Morgantown Road to North 700’

•Road crossing U.S. 231 at Sharon Drive
