We have always been a river town

It’s exciting to see some major riverfront development happening in Bowling Green. I feel like sometimes this place forgets it even has a river.

Rewind 200 years ago and this was a riverport, long before it had the railroad or the interstates. Towboats and barges still flowed down to Boatlanding Road as late as 1965. But decades before, steamboats chugged along the Barren, same as they would in Louisville or Cincinnati. And though the commercial traffic ended when the Woodbury dam failed 60 years ago, the heritage is still there.

This is a river town. Always has been. And in 2023 it’s good to see some of that heritage of progress and development coming back along our Barren River.
