Local train engineer Joe Burke was featured in the Nov. 1, 1930, edition of the Daily News.

“Tis about two million miles I have driven the likes of this fellow,” he said as he patted his big L&N Pan-American locomotive. His biggest worry in his 48-year career was the automobiles trying to beat him crossing the tracks; his engine alone had struck six, and L&N had just instituted a new signal procedure to warn motorists of oncoming trains. Burke lived in Bowling Green all his life, and passed away in 1941 at the age of 76.
