John Adams wished that the remembrance of the Fourth of July would be a great day of celebration and “prayerful devotion to God Almighty.” He hoped for parades, shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations “from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forever more.”

The Fourth of July remains a time of celebration for the independence of our country and as a chance for family time. The Felts family is shown having a July Fourth picnic in 1900 in grand Adams style.
