Can’t decide what to see this weekend?
Bowling Green Daily News film critic Micheal Compton is here to tell you the best – and worst – now playing at your local cineplex.
The Best of Enemies (C)
This based on an incredible true story of an unlikely friendship between a Civil Rights activist (Taraji P. Henson) and Klu Klux Klan leader (Sam Rockwell) lacks that emotional punch you would expect. In the hands of first time director/screen writer Robin Bissell every scene feels calculated down to a second, resulting in a movie that feels way too safe and down the middle. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12)
Captain Marvel (B)
The 21st movie in the franchise doesn’t just serve as an origin story, it is the bridge between last year’s “Infinity Wars” and its conclusion that comes out next month, “End Game.” (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas, Franklin Drive-In)
Dumbo (D+)
Walt Disney once again reaches into its animated vault for a live-action reboot with its latest film, “Dumbo.”
With Tim Burton behind the camera and a star-studded cast that includes Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton and Danny Devito, the ingredients seemed to be there for a successful transition. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case as the updated “Dumbo” is a soulless, dull and dreary endeavor that never quite soars to the heights to which it aims. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas, Franklin Drive-In)
Five Feet Apart (C)
Leads Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse give it everything they have in this hokey teen romance flick about two people suffering from cystic fibrosis who find love. (Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas)
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (B)
Another well-crafted entry into the popular animated series that feels like the final chapter of a very satisfying trilogy. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas)
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (B+)
The return to the original Lego world is a joyful reunion that may not have quite the same charm as the original, but it is still pretty awesome. (Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10)
Pet Sematary (not reviewed at this time)
(Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas)
Shazam! (B)
After what seems like a never-ending parade of films with brooding heroes, the DC Universe finally takes a turn for the lighter side (sort of) in this origin story for the teenager turned superhero.
It’s a nice departure from previous DC entries, one that is much more fun than most of its predecessors and way more fun than the dreadful trailer that played on every film the last six months suggests. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas)
Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral (D)
What is billed as the final film to feature Tyler Perry’s beloved character Madea is pretty much like every other one in the series – an uneven comedy that is poorly edited and poorly directed. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Highland Cinemas)
The Upside (B-)
The remake of the French film “The Intouchables” is a formulaic film that really doesn’t take many chances. Sometimes the pacing feels off and the story never really has any surprises.
Even with all of that “The Upside” manages to work thanks to an ace, make that two aces, up its sleeve – Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart. (Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10)
Unplanned (not reviewed at this time)
(Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10)
Us (A-)
Writer/director Jordan Peele’s follow-up to “Get Out” once again takes the horror genre and spins it in intriguing ways to create an experience that feels like some wonderful mix of Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas)
Wonder Park (not reviewed at this time)
